Historic Number Of Women Elected To Senate

November 07, 2012 at 3:37 am

The 113th Congress will have at least 19 female senators, the most ever in U.S. history. There are now 17 female U.S. senators, the current record number.

Democrat Heidi Heitkamp was on the cusp of an upset in the North Dakota Senate race early Wednesday morning, which could bring the total of women senators to 20.

Republican Deb Fischer won the Nebraska race and Democrats Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin, Mazie Hirono of Hawaii and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts were also elected Tuesday.

All six Democratic women up for reelection — Sens. Maria Cantwell (WA), Dianne Feinstein (CA), Kirsten Gillibrand (NY), Amy Klobuchar (MN), Claire McCaskill (MO) and Debbie Stabenow (MI) — won their races.
