By The Numbers: Tampa Convention

August 20, 2012 at 3:27 pm

Our convention guru Donovan Myrie breaks down some RNC numbers:

175 Million: The amount of dollars expected to have an economic impact on the Tampa Bay region as a result of the 2012 GOP Convention…

55 Million: The fundraising dollar goal set by the Tampa Bay Host Committee…

50 Million: The amount of dollars awarded to the City of Tampa through the Federal Convention Security Grant to cover security costs of the 2012 GOP Convention…

45 Million: The dollar amount of a private fund used for the recent overhaul of the Tampa Bay Times Forum…

24.85 Million: The dollar amount the City of Tampa allocated for law enforcement personnel for the GOP Convention. Of that money, just $4 million went to the Tampa Police Department; the rest of the money went to officers from other agencies. Tampa enlisted help from 63 other police departments to bring in some 3,500 – 4,000 “contingency officers.”  The City Council voted on the spending measure on June 28, 2012…

20 Million: The dollar amount the Tampa Bay Host Committee will spend on renovations to prepare the Tampa Bay Times Forum for the GOP Convention…

6 Million: The dollar amount the Tampa Police Department is spending on additional portable and mobile radios for law enforcement officers. Once the 2012 GOP Convention is over, extra radios will be stored with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office for future use…

2 Million: The dollar amount the Tampa Police Department is spending on sixty new surveillance cameras to be installed in downtown…

1.37 Million: The amount of dollars the Tampa Bay Host Committee paid the city of Tampa to rent the Tampa Convention Center for the 2012 GOP Convention.  The Host Committee has access to the Convention Center from July 16 to September 8, 2012. No price has been disclosed for the Host Committee’s renting of the Tampa Bay Times Forum (that is a private contract, details of which do not have to be made public)…

1.18 Million: The amount of dollars the Tampa Police Department is spending to upgrade communication links between its three choppers and ground units…

518,460: Amount of dollars the Tampa Police Department will spend on gas masks and accessories for officers assigned to the GOP Convention…

319,400: Amount of dollars the Tampa Police Department will spend on specialized patrol bicycles for law enforcement officers in anticipation of specialized patrols for the Convention…

50,000:  Estimated number of visitors expected at the 2012 GOP Convention. These include politicians, delegates, dignitaries, etc…

40,971:  The number of sworn officers and deputies in the state of Florida (according to the FDLE)…

21,000:  The number of journalists, delegates, and VIPs invited to the Tampa Bay Host Committee’s Welcome Party on August 26th at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg…

15,000:  The estimated number of credentialed media attending the 2012 GOP Convention…

4,411: The estimated number of delegates and alternates expected to attend the convention. According to the Committee on Arrangements, there will be 2,286 delegates and 2,125 alternates. During the Convention, some of the delegates will serve on one of four committees: Resolutions, Credentials, Rules, and Permanent Organization…

3,500 – 4,000:     The amount of additional “contingency” officers for the GOP Convention requested by the Tampa Police Department from other state agencies. As mentioned, contingency officers came from 63 other police departments across Florida…

3,000: The amount of seats removed and stored at the Tampa bay Times Forum to make room for the GOP Convention stage and camera platforms…

1,700:    The estimated amount of National Guard troops to be deployed in Tampa Bay for the 2012 GOP Convention. The cost of deploying the Guard troops are expensed back to the Pentagon and are not paid for out of the City of Tampa’s $50 million federal grant…

982: Approximate number of sworn Tampa Police Department officers…

818 The total number of people arrested at the 2008 St. Paul/ Minneapolis GOP Convention.

400: The amount of charter buses supplied to the 2012 GOP Convention by SP Plus Gameday Management for ferrying delegates around the region…

242: The amount of new lights installed in the Tampa Bay Times Forum to help enhance high-definition broadcast coverage of the GOP Convention…

99: Original number of delegates for the state of Florida; that number was cut to 50 because Florida violated party rules for moving up their primary to January 31, 2012 well before the March 6 date set forth by the Republican National Committee. Aside from moving up its primary, Florida also violated another rule of winner-take-all: no Republican primary could be winner-take-all if it took place before April 1, 2012. Although Florida violated two rules, the state was only punished once as RNC rules only make provisions for singular punishments. Florida will only be able to “seat” 50 delegates on the floor of the Tampa Bay Times Forum…

73: The official number of approved venues for GOP Convention related social events…
