It’s Official: Charlie Crist Is Backing Nelson
August 01, 2012 at 3:38 pm
Former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist will attend a Thursday fundraiser for Sen. Bill Nelson’s (D-FL) in Orlando, the AP is reporting.
Crist, who lost a Senate race to now-Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) in 2010, said Wednesday that he plans to attend the fundraiser for Nelson at the home of trial attorney John Morgan. Former president Bill Clinton is headlining the $1,000 a-head-fundraiser.
The former Republican governor switched his party affiliation to Independent during his bruising 2010 campaign for U.S. Senate.
Crist is the de facto beneficiary of the “buyer’s remorse” Florida voters are feeling towards Florida Gov. Rick Scott and, to a lesser extent, Sen. Marco Rubio. Now that he is comfortably removed from the spotlight, Crist is enjoying a surge in popularity.
Crist said he is supporting Nelson over likely-GOP nominee Connie Mack because Nelson is a friend and a good voice for Florida.
