A round-up of today’s news and the emerging political narrative:
His GPS Just Took Him To K Street: According to the New York Times, Rick Santorum “went to work for some of the firms that benefited from his legislative efforts, a move that appears at odds” with the candidate’s small government philosophy “and his campaign’s portrayal of the candidate as a champion of working people.”
Don’t Ask Them Or Me: Santorum engaged in an extended and sometimes testy exchange over same-sex marriage with a group of college students during a campaign appearance yesterday (“The Caucus”)
Fast Times At Tax Bracket High: The non-partisan Tax Policy Center analyzed Mitt Romney’s tax proposals and, according to the Wall Street Journal, concluded that Romney’s plan “would reduce taxes significantly for high-income earners,” and “raise taxes slightly for low-income families.”
Showed Up In Your Own Backyard: Jon Huntsman picked up an endorsement from the Boston Globe, which passed over hometown reader Romney. The endorsement notes while “Romney proceeds cautiously, strategically, trying to appease enough constituencies to get himself the nomination, Huntsman has been bold. Rather than merely sketch out policies, he articulates goals and ideals.”
The Dock of the Bay: Meanwhile, Romney landed the endorsement of former U.S. Treasure, Ronald Reagan adviser, and conservative activist Bay Buchanan today (Washington Times).
From The Department Of Kick ‘Em While He’s Down: Restore Our Future, a super PAC backing Romney, will run full-page ads attacking Newt Gingrich in the Manchester Union Leader and The State in Columbia, South Carolina, the most prominent newspapers in the next two states to vote (The Hill).
His Opening Act: Before even setting foot in the South Carolina this weekend, Rick Perry will “make his presence known with a new ad buy starting today. Instead of producing a completely new ad, the campaign will re-use a 30-second TV spot titled “Values,” which first aired in Iowa in November (ABC News).
Polls In The Floor Of Heaven: The latest Rasmussen survey in South Carolina of likely GOP Primary Voters finds Romney earing 27% support, with Santorum running a close second with 24% of the vote. Newt Gingrich is in third with 18% of the vote, followed by Ron Paul at 11%.
According to a new WMUR/University of New Hampshire poll, Romney leads the New Hampshire GOP field at 44% (More results expected today).
