Perry’s Ad Purge

December 01, 2011 at 5:55 pm

Rick Perry’s campaign went up with three new ads in Iowa today, an indication that the campaign is putting all their eggs in the IA caucus-basket.  The ads touch on three crucial issues for Iowa voters: evengelicals, energy and… er? what’s the last one?

Perry went on the air in Iowa with a 30-second TV spot aimed directly at the state’s evangelical conservatives, a huge voting bloc in the state. “Some liberals say that faith is a sign of weakness. They’re wrong,” Perry says in the spot. He goes on to note that he’s not “ashamed” to talk about his faith. The LA Times has more coverage of the ad here.

The second ad is a new 30-second spot, “Energy Jobs,” that casts Perry as an “outsider” and blames Obama for U.S. dependence on foreign oil. “It’s almost 2012. And we’re still addicted to foreign oil,” Perry says in the ad. “President Obama and Washington? All talk. No action. I’m an outsider, so I’ll step on a few toes if necessary to reopen our oil and gas fields.” He goes on to compare Obama’s energy policy to President Carter’s. CNN has more coverage of the ad here.

In the third ad, Perry pokes fun at himself for his infamous debate stumble. “You know, we’ve all lost our train of thought before, but not many’ve done it on national TV,” Perry says in the ad. The ad comes in advance of his scheduled appearance on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” tonight. Politico has more coverage of the ad here.
